The individual lines compare okay. 5000 nights/weekend minutes should be plenty for the avg user. I'm not sure why so many people are so upset over the prices. Compared with sprint, it is basically $15 more per month. (assuming 1500 texts is enough) or $20 for unlimited text.
Now the shared plan is where Sprint is much cheaper since their plans include text ($30 extra for at&t) and 800 more minutes. nights weekend also start at 7; not sure whet at&t starts. Also, if you have more than 2 lines, its $40 for lines 3-5 vs $20 to add those lines.
So to get the about same plan as sprint, it'd cost $20 more (for 1400 minutes), $30 for text, and $20 for lines 3-5..so roughly $25 more per person per month is what the family plan comes out to.
Over 2 years, thats $600 more per line (for family plans) and $360 for individual plans. (when compared to Sprint plans)
So that'd be the cost of the iPhone.
Sprint should give me something for advertising for them, but Sprint is definitely a better bargain.
(I do have Sprint - looking forward to a new phone in Sept (Curve or Treo 800w - basically, is wifi worth it?
or the HTC Touch Pro if its about the same price as the Treo 800w and the reviews are ok. Not sure if I'd trust them yet but the phone looks nice)
